This sigil is located on a magical lamen known as “The Holiness to the Lord” Parchment (a replica pictured below). This historical artifact is believed to have been owned by the Joseph Smith Sr. family and was passed down by descendants of Hyrum Smith until it was donated to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. This parchment has “Holiness to the Lord” written on three sides of the parchment – an phrase that continues to be used in Mormonism at the entry of LDS temples.
This sigil is found in Reginal Scot’s book The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584). A blending of Christianity and folk magic, the inscription underneath the sigil reads “Who so beareth this signe about him, let him fear no fo, but feare GOD.” This sigil continues to be used by believers of magic as a protection charm and can be folded and worn around the neck in a bag much like Smith family members may have done 200 years ago.
